I track my net worth (using this tool) every two weeks. On 10/1/2022, my net worth was $86,284. On 10/1/2023, my net worth was $178,022—so I’ve increased my net worth by nearly $100k in 1 year! Several factors contribute to my ability to save and invest each month (more here), but these 3 money habits save me thousands annually:
1. Cook at home (most of the time) 🍝
And to clarify, this does not mean I never eat out and this does not mean I deprive myself of good food!
I spend money on quality ingredients and I spend time experimenting with new recipes to make sure I get plenty of variety in my diet.
I only started cooking a little over a year ago (and I wasn’t particularly good at it), but I’ve come to really enjoy cooking and eating home-cooked food!

2. Drive less (due to WFH) 🚗
As a software engineer, I have the option to work from home. Not being forced to commute to the office has saved me thousands, especially with gas prices being so high. I really love working from home and when I search for my next job, having the option to WFH will be a big factor for me.
3. Cut out alcohol (mostly) 🍷
Again, this isn’t a hard and fast rule. I’ll still have the occasional drink with friends—but I’ve almost completely cut alcohol out of my life. My wallet and my body feel better!
I also never got in the habit of drinking tea or coffee, so I save a ton there.

Oh man. The past couple years I’ve also been drinking less. I just don’t like it as much anymore. But that still doesn’t stop me from spending $$ on food and concert tickets lol
